Context and objectives

To meet all the needs of their development, plants have developed during the evolution of complex functional and hierarchical structures. All these structures have functional properties as diverse as outstanding based organizations / structuring sophisticated biopolymers that compose them. Key structures for the creation of these features are mostly microscopic and nano scales. The objectives of the team are focused on understanding the functional information carried by biopolymers or already pre-assembled sets (aggregates, crystals, lipid bilayers) handled as individual objects as well as the development of strategies for structuring the scales nano and microscopic.

These objects can be:

  • biomimetic models or assemblies of natural objects to extract the principles and organizational characteristics of biopolymers or sets preassembled
  • dedicated to a specific function (optical, mechanical, reconnaissance, transportation, ..) to generate new materials based on polymers of natural origin

In both cases, these approaches require to be innovative, to take advantage of current and emerging technologies such as microfluidics.


Research lines

Operationally, the activity of the team revolves around three topics:

  • Biomimetic System
  • Functional  micro and nano particles
  • Biosourced thin films and composites

In each case, the heart of the work of the team is focused on the development of materials, the development of strategies for structuring and characterizing architectures. The evaluation of the properties is performed in-house or external collaboration with relevant BIA teams intended scope.

Methods and Equipment

The team has one room with three functional microfluidic and all the equipment necessary for the realization of circuits PDMS posts. Regarding the thematic area, two robots have been designed to develop surfaces and soaking spincoating We also acquired two analytical equipment surface interactions namely a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D E4) coupled to spectroscopic ellipsometer (M2000 U Woolman) and BIAcore (X100). The team also has various devices for sample preparation team: centrifuges, high pressure homogenizer, freeze, etc...
