IFCE Webconference "Piroplasmosis: parasites, ticks, equids, environments

On June 8, 2021, the Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Equitation (IFCE) offered a webconference by Laurence Malandrin, head of the PiroGoTick project, entitled "Piroplasmosis: parasites, ticks, Equids, environments". The video is available on YouTube (in french).

Summary :

Piroplasmosis. With this single term, two diseases with complex characteristics are already simplified. Equine piroplasmosis is in fact two different parasites responsible, each with a very high genetic diversity. Equine piroplasmosis, there are several different possible vectors, with several species/types of ticks present on Equidae, with or without the competence to transmit one or the other of the parasites. Piroplasmosis, Equidae are not equal in front of ticks and therefore in front of the diseases they transmit. The piroplasmosis is therefore the result of a diversity of actors in different environments that influence its epidemiology.

  • Why focus on vector diversity ??

Because they are different according to the regions of our beautiful France, which knows a great diversity of climates.
Because they do not all transmit the same parasites.

  • Why are we interested in the genetic diversity of parasites?

Because it could influence the capacity of a tick to transmit a particular genetic variant of parasite.
Because it can influence the results of serological and molecular diagnostics.
Because its knowledge is an essential step to progress towards a vaccine.
