Olivier Plantard's conference on "Ticks: arachnids addicted to blood meals" - Nantes

Olivier Plantard, INRA research director at UMR BIOEPAR, will give a lecture at the Nantes Natural History Museum on Tuesday 20 November 2018 at 8.30 pm.

As part of "Museum Tuesdays - the meetings of science", Olivier Plantard (UMR BIOEPAR), will give a lecture at the Nantes Natural History Museum on Tuesday 20 November 2018 at 8.30 pm.

Ticks are acarids - a group included in that of arachnids alongside spiders - exclusively haematophagous. They can thus ingest infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, protozoa...) and transmit them to another vertebrate during the next blood meal, making ticks the main group of disease vectors in temperate zones. More than 900 species have been described in the world and about 40 are present in France. Parasites of terrestrial vertebrates for more than 300 million years, they have developed numerous adaptations over the course of their evolution, enabling them to locate their host, to attach themselves to it, to ingest an impressive quantity of blood and to metabolise it for their development and reproduction. We will discuss how a better understanding of the ecology and biology of these organisms can lead to the development of vector control methods to combat these diseases.
