SPACE Conference: In the West, something new for grazers

SPACE Conference: In the West, something new for grazers

UMR BIOEPAR led a series of exchanges at SPACE in Rennes as part of the Santinnov project.

Around sixty participants attended the conference organised on 11 September 2018 by the Institut de l'Elevage in partnership with INRA and Oniris on the theme of optimising the health of young cattle in fattening (grazing cattle).
More than half of the health problems in fattening workshops for young cattle are linked to respiratory pathologies. These diseases have multiple causes, which are often difficult for farmers to control and lead to a drop in economic and technical performance. Several avenues of reflection have recently been explored to improve the health of animals from the moment they enter the fattening workshop.
The various speakers gave an update on several recent and innovative studies carried out on this subject in collaboration with the Institut de l'Élevage, INRA, Oniris (UMR Inra-Oniris BIOEPAR) and groups and breeders in the West as part of the Sant'Innov project. The aim of this project is to propose managerial, organizational and technical solutions to develop animal product chains towards a greening of the agricultural production stage through the use of grazing for dairy cattle and the reduction of the use of antibiotics in dairy, beef cattle and pig production systems. A particular focus on these avenues for improvement has been proposed by :

  • Nathalie Bareille, teacher-researcher UMR Inra-Oniris BIOEPAR and scientific coordinator of the Santinnov project on "The importance of allotment for the performance and health of grazers".
  • Florence Beaugrand lecturer-researcher UMR Inra-Oniris BIOEPAR on "Initiatives by organisations for exchanges between breeders and fatteners of grazers for better prevention of respiratory diseases".
