TRANSPIRO, a new research programme on equine piroplasmosis!

This collaborative programme between the veterinary schools of Lyon and Nantes focuses on the transmission of piroplasmosis by asymptomatic infected broodmares to their newborn foals and the evaluation of the rate of piroplasmosis-carrying abortions. It is carried out in collaboration between the Lyon and Nantes veterinary schools.

The TRANSPIRO project is led by a hospital practitioner at the Clinéquine de Lyon and aims to determine whether there is TRANSplacental transmission of PIROplasmosis from infected, asymptomatic broodmares to their newborn foals, and to estimate its frequency in a context of high carriage in the south of France (for more information, click here). Indeed, preliminary data from PiroGoTick's PiroQuest programme estimates the prevalence of Theileria equidae at 60% in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (see data by clicking here).

To carry out this project, the Clinéquine (VetAgro Sup, Lyon Veterinary School) is collaborating with the TIBODI team of the UMR BIOEPAR (PiroGoTick project) and teacher-researchers specialised in animal reproduction from Oniris (CRTI-UMR1064 INSERM), and it is financed by the French Veterinary Schools.

These results will complement those obtained in the PiroGoTick project.
