The Inra Pays de la Loire centre at the Science Festival

Le centre Inra Pays de la Loire à la Fête de la science

Scientists from the TiBoDi group (Ticks and tick-Borne Diseases) of UMR BIOEPAR were present from 13 to 15 October 2017 at the Science Village at ENSA (Nantes School of Architecture) to respond to the general public and schoolchildren.

In Nantes

From animal health to food safety to plant proteins

From animal health to plant proteins and food safety: different units of the Inra Pays de la Loire centre were gathered at the Science Village in Nantes to illustrate the diversity of research being conducted in a context of climate, energy and food transition.
Scientists from the INRA Pays de la Loire centre's units (BIOEPAR, SECALIM, PANTHER, PHAN and BIA units) welcomed the general public and schoolchildren at the next Science Festival from 13 to 15 October at the Science Village (Nantes School of Architecture, Ile de Nantes, 6 quai François Mitterrand).

Different workshops will be proposed during the following 3 days :

Friday 13 October from 9.30am to 5.30pm/day reserved for schoolchildren. The centre is associated with the "Habitat of the Future Science Fair 2017" project, which offered high school students from the Guist'hau and La Colinière high schools the opportunity to participate in a forward-looking journey so that they can question and exchange ideas on how we will live in 2038. The aim is for them to develop a scenario of the habitat of the future that they will present to a jury of experts. The first stage is an experience in an immersive exhibition entitled #2038 that the Cnam Pays de la Loire has developed as part of Investments for the Future. The second part of the course will allow students to carry out a field survey by meeting experts in the fields of transport, energy and food at the stands of the Nantes Science Village.

  • Anti-tik tactics: ticks, important vectors of human and animal diseases: observation with a binocular magnifying glass of tick development stages (larva, nymph, adult), microscope observation of pathogens (e.g. Babesia) on animal blood smears, demonstration of tick collection with a sheet and/or flag (UMR BIOEPAR).
  • Food and hygiene: handling with microscope observation (yoghurt observation) DNA extraction, tablet quizzes, puzzles on bacteria or the classification of different objects according to their contamination (SECALIM unit).
  • Fun workshops to discover the work of the PANTHER unit in gene and cell therapy applied to hereditary diseases affecting the muscle (Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and the nervous system (Pompe disease) Friday 13 October all day long.
  • Eat well to grow well :
    • I make my menu : I compose my menu for my next meal. For this I choose foods among those proposed (images of the food - starter, main courses, desserts, drinks). The children (6 at a time) will have a tray, plates and pictures of food portions. They will have to fill their tray according to the menu they have prepared. The contents of the tray will be discussed on the basis of the food pyramid.
    • I recognize foods according to their quantity (content) of sugar / protein.
    • Sugars: the children (6 at a time) will have to place glasses containing different amounts of sugar in front of the different foods on offer in order to find the correct combinations (amount of sugar in the glass / amount of sugar in the food portion).
    • Proteins: the same activity is proposed with jars containing proteins of animal and vegetable origin.
    • Discussions on their choices, eating habits and possible health consequences will be developed during the activities (PHAN and BIA units)

In Angers

Conference on: Will the village of tomorrow be a vegetable one?

What are the current experiences and practices, from the shared garden to high-tech food production? A global overview of the different forms of urban horticulture will be presented with the challenges for the increasingly urban 21st century.
With Philippe Morel-Chevillet, INRA Research Engineer in the UMR IRHS Inra-Agrocampus-University of Angers in Angers and Guillaume Morel-Chevillet, Astredhor Engineer in Paris.
