Thomas Aubineau (a veterinarian employed by GDS Bretagne (Rennes branch)) remains employed by his company, which has undertaken to provide him with 40% of his thesis, which will be completed in 4 years. He will work on the influence of dairy cow feed pipes on hypocalcaemia and energy disorders around the part and in connection with the occurrence of infectious diseases in the first weeks postpartum. Her work is co-supervised by BIOEPAR and PEGASE (Anne Boudon) and is financed by several feed companies.

Thesis subject:

In dairy cows, the incidence of predominant infectious diseases (metritis, mastitis) and consequently the use of antibiotics is highest in the postpartum period. It has now been shown that certain metabolic disorders (hypocalcaemia, energy deficiency with acetonaemia) that occur around calving are the cause of immune depression in the first days after calving and can thus favour the occurrence of infectious diseases in the postpartum period. Concerning control strategies, mainly associated with the management of the dry period (cessation of lactation), studies on the subject are scattered and most often come from North America, where the systems are very different from those found in Western Europe and France, where the use of grazing (expected by the consumer citizen) complicates the approach.

The aim of the project is to generate new knowledge on the diversity of feeding behaviours during the dry period and their influence on the incidence of metabolic disorders at calving, in order to improve strategies for preventing postpartum infectious disorders in dairy cows through better management of dry cow feeding and consequently better control of metabolic disorders around calving. The project thus contributes to the search for alternatives to the use of antibiotics and other drug inputs in the management of infectious diseases in dairy cattle.

The project has 3 main objectives:

  • To describe the diversity of feed behaviours during the dry period in the different French dairy systems.
  • To assess the influence of dry period feeding behaviour on the incidence of hypocalcaemia and calving energy deficit in French dairy systems.
  • To develop and evaluate a strategy to detect farms at high risk of hypocalcemia and energy deficit at calving.
