Many countries in the European Union have set up their own programmes to control unregulated contagious livestock diseases. The diversity of these methods makes comparison difficult, and reduces confidence in the exchange of livestock from different countries. The objective of the SOUND Control project is to take stock of existing programmes in Europe for the surveillance, control or eradication of these diseases and to compare their results in an objective and standardised manner. The results will be compared from both an epidemiological and economic point of view, in particular with regard to ensuring that animals are free of disease, in order to improve the safety of trade.
The SOUND Control project brings together researchers from 30 countries, mainly from the European Union. UMR BIOEPAR is co-coordinator of the project (Christine Fourichon is Vice-Chairman of the project).

This project will also enable the unit to use the results of flagship projects such as STOC free (Surveillance Tool for Outcome-based Comparison of FREEdom from infection), a project funded by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).

Project Workstreams :

The studies will be carried out within the framework of 5 working groups, on the following axes :

1.  Characteristics of existing master's programs

2. Assessment of data needs and availability

3. Evaluation of existing methods (Aurélien Madouasse,UMR BIOEPAR, leader of the working group)

4. Assess knowledge gaps

5. Dissemination and communication

Project duration: The project started in October 2018 and will end in October 2022.
